The AV-SP10L is a complete, ready-to-run 10 L glass short-path (molecular) distillation kit engineered for laboratory R&D and larger small-batch purification of heat-sensitive oils, extracts and fine chemicals. The kit is built around a borosilicate 3.3 short-path distillation head with a vacuum-jacketed vapor channel, a 10 L round-bottom flask heated and stirred by a 2100 W magnetic-stirring heating mantle, internal condenser and dry-ice cold traps. It ships complete with two 2XZ-2 rotary-vane vacuum pumps (ultimate vacuum 0.06 Pa) and an AVDC-1010 recirculating chiller (-10 to 95 °C), so the system is simply assembled and operated on any bench top. Because distillation takes place under deep vacuum (about 5 Pa), volatile components boil at far lower temperatures and travel only a very short distance before condensing - protecting thermally unstable compounds and leaving only a minimal residue.

The 10 L round-bottom flask (5) sits in the 10 L magnetic-stirring heating mantle (6) below the short-path distillation head (3), which carries the thermometer (4) and the condenser (7). Distillate is routed through the glass three-way adapter with valve (8) and the stainless-steel three-way adapter (10) into the 2 L receiving flask (12) and the 500 mL receiving flask (15), which rest on cork flask supports (13) on the stainless-steel lab jacks (14), the support stand (16) and the chain clamp (17). The vacuum gauge (9) and the dry-ice cold trap (11) sit between the glass train and the vacuum pumps (2), while the thermostatic circulating bath (1) supplies coolant to the condensers.

Working Principle

  • Short-path distillation separates liquid mixtures by exploiting differences in boiling point under negative pressure. As the sample in the boiling flask is heated, volatile components evaporate and rise into the condenser, where they are chilled by coolant circulated from the recirculating chiller and collected as distillate; higher-boiling residues remain in the flask. Because the unit operates under deep vacuum, the effective boiling temperature is far lower than at standard pressure, and the vapor travels only a very short distance before condensing. This makes the technique ideal for compounds that are unstable at high temperatures, and the short, low-pressure path also means that far less material is left behind as residue after distillation.
